Forget the Magic Quadrant

Every year, the same analyst reports rank SASE vendors on axes nobody can reproduce. Vendors pay for placement, cherry-pick metrics, and publish tables that somehow show themselves winning every category.

We took a different approach. We tested 8 SASE vendors across 12 security topics and 121 specific feature checks. Every answer is YES, NO, or PARTIAL, backed by public documentation. No vendor paid to be listed, and no vendor reviewed this before publication.

Here is what the data actually shows.

The Overall Ranking

Overall YES rate across all 121 checks. Before you take this and run: a vendor that scores 85% overall might score 20% in the category that matters most to you. The profiles below show exactly where each one leads and breaks.

The 8 Leading Vendors, Profiled

Overall rank is a headline, not a verdict. Each card shows where a vendor genuinely leads and the single gap most likely to matter. Every score links to the underlying comparison.

1
Palo Alto Networks
Palo Alto Networks
85.1%

The broadest feature coverage of any vendor tested.

Biggest gap
Mobile TLS2/10

Deep mobile inspection is weak across the industry, and Palo Alto is no exception.

Best for: Large enterprises that want the most boxes checked and will pay for it.

Cato vs Palo Alto
2
Zscaler
Zscaler
81.8%

Security-first and cloud-native, with just 1 NO across 121 checks.

Biggest gap
SD-WAN7/10

Security-first origins show in advanced branch routing and WAN optimization.

Best for: Security-first organizations that prioritize DLP and zero trust.

Cato vs Zscaler
3
Netskope
Netskope
81.8%

Strong SD-WAN alongside security, with a distributed global backbone.

Biggest gap
Mobile TLS1/10

Lowest mobile deep-inspection score alongside Cisco. A deal-breaker for heavy unmanaged mobile.

Best for: Organizations that need strong SD-WAN with security and global reach.

Netskope vs Zscaler
4
Cato Networks
Cato Networks
77.7%

The poster child for true single-vendor SASE, built on one platform.

Biggest gap
GenAI DLP16/23

Below average for the price point. Single-vendor means gaps take longer to fill in-house.

Best for: Mid-to-large enterprises that value simplicity and one platform that just works.

Cato vs Zscaler
5
Cisco
Cisco
72.7%

Enterprise networking DNA with best-in-class monitoring and IoT.

Biggest gap
Global PoP2/8

Multiple acquired products have not fully converged. Unified management is only 5/10.

Best for: Existing Cisco shops with heavy branch office and IoT requirements.

Cisco vs Palo Alto
6
Cloudflare
Cloudflare
70.2%

The fastest time-to-value and one of the widest global footprints.

Biggest gap
IoT / OT1/5

Worst of all vendors. Origins as a security/CDN company show in networking depth.

Best for: Cloud-native organizations that want fast deployment and a modern console.

Cloudflare vs Zscaler
7
Fortinet
Fortinet
68.6%

Networking and OT depth backed by FortiGuard and ASIC hardware.

Biggest gap
BYOD2/8

Worst of all vendors. The cloud-native SASE experience still shows friction.

Best for: Organizations with heavy OT/IoT needs and existing FortiGate infrastructure.

Cato vs Fortinet
8
Check Point
Check Point
63.6%

Deep threat intelligence from ThreatCloud AI across the Harmony suite.

Biggest gap
DEM0/8

The only vendor scoring zero. The Perimeter 81-based SASE offering is still maturing.

Best for: Organizations already invested in the Check Point security ecosystem.

4 Things the Data Makes Obvious

1

No vendor wins everything

The highest overall score is 85.1%. Every vendor has at least one category where it scores below 50%. Rankings are a starting point, not an answer.

2

Mobile TLS inspection is the industry's blind spot

The average pass rate for TLS inspection on mobile is just 31%. Even the best vendor (Zscaler) clears only 60% of mobile-specific checks.

3

The true single-vendor question still matters

Vendors grown by acquisition tend to have broader features but lower unified-management scores. Purpose-built platforms have cleaner consoles but narrower breadth.

4

SD-WAN is table stakes, DEM is the differentiator

Six of 8 vendors score 9/10 or higher on SD-WAN. The real gap is Digital Experience Monitoring, which ranges from 8/8 to 0/8.

How to Actually Use This

The single most important takeaway is that overall rank is the wrong way to choose a SASE platform. The gap between first and last is 21 points, but the gap between best and worst within a single topic is often larger than that.

Identify the 3 or 4 topics that matter most to your organization, look at per-topic scores, and weight accordingly. A vendor at rank 6 overall may be the clear leader in the one capability you cannot compromise on.

All data on SASECompare is free, independent, and updated as vendors ship new capabilities. Click any topic to see the evidence behind every YES, NO, and PARTIAL.

Methodology: All scores are based on publicly available vendor documentation, knowledge base articles, and verified user reports across 12 security and networking topics and 121 total checks. Vendors are not notified before testing and do not pay for inclusion. See individual comparison pages for full source citations. Data current as of 2026.
